The German is in pole position to claim the final berth at the season finale in Istanbul later this month following Maria Sharapova’s withdrawal from the event.

Kerber, who reached the final in Tokyo before falling in the quarter-finals of the China Open last week, took advantage of Petra Kvitova’s withdrawal from the Generali Ladies Linz to take up a late entry after the draw had been made.

She currently sits in ninth place in the race to qualify on 3505 points, and with just over 200 points' advantage over Caroline Wozniacki, Kerber has her fate in her own hands.

By reaching the semi-finals in Linz, where she is the top seed, she will secure her place in Turkey. Failing that, Kerber will have another chance in Russia next week, where reaching the quarter-finals in Moscow will be enough.

Wozniacki meanwhile, needs to win in Luxembourg next week to have any chance of qualifying, while Sloane Stephens and Roberta Vinci are still mathematically capable of snatching the final berth.
