The 25-year-old suffered a major knee ligament injury when playing doubles in Stanford, California, last month, and was forced to abandon her season.

She said: “I underwent surgery on Tuesday and it all went according to plan – so far so good. I start my rehab now and time will tell as to when I can get back to playing competitively again. I hope to be back by February, which is ambitious, but achievable.”

The Australian Open begins on January 18, and Keothavong would not enter without having match practice in advance, nor is she thinking about making an early return.

She said: “My rehab will consist of physiotherapy, working on getting my strength back and improving the range of movement, which takes a while.

“The rehab process is quite time consuming – there is a lot of work to do in order for me to be back competing within six months.”

Keothavong played her way into the world’s top 50 earlier this season but six months of inactivity will mean her ranking plummets.
