Alona was understandably favourite to progress but was upset by her younger sibling who beat her with relative ease, 6-1 6-3.

Sixth seed Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia was knocked out after being beaten 6-2 7-6 (7/5) by Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky.

Czech number three seed Iveta Benesova had more success, however, beating local wild card Karolina Pliskova 6-7 (7/5) 6-1 6-3.

Home favourites Lucie Hradecka and Petra Kvitova, seventh and eighth seeds, enjoyed straight-sets victories over Ksenia Pervak and Anna Lapushchenkova respectively.

Britain’s Katie O’Brien suffered a comprehensive 6-3 6-2 defeat by Monica Niculescu of Romania.
