Kanepi springs a surprise

The Spaniard, who reached the fourth round at the Australian Open last month, was beaten in three sets by Kaia Kanepi.

Medina Garrigues took the first set but her Estonian opponent, who is at a career-high ranking of 23, stormed back to level and then won a tight decider for a 3-6 6-2 7-5 victory.

In Monday’s other first-round matches, China’s Li Na defeated Agnes Szavay of Hungary 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 while Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was a comfortable 6-4 6-1 victor over Virginie Razzano.

Oxana Lyubtsova, Emilie Loit, Karolina Sprem and Anastasija Sevastova sealed their places in the first round with victories in the final round of qualifying.
