Jankovic upset in Zurich

Jankovic came into this hardcourt event having won her last three tournaments and sporting a 12-match winning streak, but the Serbian is now packing her bags.

Pennetta’s victory was her first in six career meetings with Jankovic, the world number one and WTA wins leader this season with 63.

The 26-year-old Italian, gunning for her third title of the season, will meet Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia in the quarter-finals.

Fourth-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva was also upset in the second round on Thursday after retiring in the second set against Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Medina Garrigues won the first set, 6-3, and held a 3-0 lead in the next before Zvonareva was unable to continue.

The runner-up to Jankovic last weekend in Moscow, Zvonareva reached a career-high ranking of eighth earlier this week.

Srebotnik posted an upset of her own Thursday, rallying for a 2-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 win over fifth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska.

Ana Ivanovic took a step toward ending her recent struggles as the second-seeded Serb moved through to the quarters with a 6-2 6-4 triumph over Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli.

Awaiting Ivanovic in the quarters is Czech qualifier Petra Kvitova, a 6-2 6-1, winner over Sofia Arvidsson, while Belarus native Victoria Azarenka, who demolished Monica Niculescu, 6-0 6-0, awaits Medina Garrigues.
