The sixth-seeded Serbian, who finished last year as women’s world number one, won 6-4 7-6 (7/0) but at one stage seemed sure to be heading for a deciding set.

Having clawed back for a tie-break though, Jankovic took a clean sweep of the points to close out in emphatic style.

Jankovic, still looking for her first grand slam title, swept into a 5-1 lead in the opening set but was held up in the seventh game when Goerges fought back to hold her serve – but only just.

She lost the next two games as Goerges fought back to make the score 5-4.

Goerges continued the fight into the 10th game where she almost broke serve once more but Jankovic held on.

Jankovic, already with strapping on her big toe, required attention to her little toe in the break between sets.

And Goerges came out fighting in the second set and broke Jankovic’s serve to love to take a 4-2 lead.

The unfancied Goerges was playing some fantastic tennis and another love-game on her serve made the score 5-2.

But Jankovic was in a fighting mood and held serve before breaking the German to trail 5-4. The Serbian made it 5-5 and completed the fightback by taking the match in the tie-break.
