The second seed Serbian lost the first set 3-6 but recovered to take the next two 6-3 7-6 (8/6) in a marathon two hours 42 minutes. It was a rather different encounter to yesterday’s, when she needed little more than an hour to down Selima Sfar 6-3 6-0.

With the Serena Williams having already been knocked out, Jankovic is the favourite but she must first get past Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues in the last four, who beat sixth seed Sara Errani 6-2 6-7 (7/4) 7-5.

In the top half of the draw, Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain thrashed Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-1 6-2 to set up a semi-final against Sorana Cirstea who needed two and a half hours to see off world number 21 Kaia Kanepi 6-4 2-6 7-5.
