Jankovic took 70 minutes to despatch of Austrian Yvonne Meusburger in the first round but needed one hour 46 minutes to see off the challenge of Flipkens in the Hisense Arena.

World number one Jankovic broke serve in the fifth game of the opening set but Flipkens immediately battled back to take the next game.

However, Jankovic again broke service to move ahead and then took the next game to claim the first set 6-4.

Flipkens moved into a 3-1 lead in the second set but Jankovic quickly fought back and twice broke serve only for her opponent to again wrestle her way back in front at 5-4.

However, Jankovic’s class told as she won the next three games to take the match and set-up a third round match with 26th-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan.
