Murray and Butorac, who have not played together since the International Series tournament in New Haven in August 2007, were seeded 16th in Melbourne but went down 6-4 6-4 to the unseeded pair of Nicolas Lapentti and Tommy Robredo in the opening round.

“It was tough conditions and we didn’t play particularly well and got beaten,” said Murray.

“I lost my serve something like four times so we were always kind of fighting to get back into it.

“In both sets we broke back but I gave my serve away straight away. It wasn’t a great performance and probably not the most enjoyable match I’ve played in.”

Murray added the fact he and Butorac had not played for such a long time had not been an issue.

“It wouldn’t matter who my partner was I served like a dog and I didn’t really help my partner out too much at all,” he said. “t just wasn’t really a great performance.”
