Ivanovic and Mauresmo battle through

Serbia’s Ivanovic lost the first set on the tie-break to Italian Roberta Vinci but battled back to prevail 6-7 (4/7) 7-5 6-1.

Frenchwoman Mauresmo found herself down 2-5 to compatriot Julie Coin in the third set, but staged a remarkable comeback to eventually win 5-7 6-2 7-6 (13/11) in three hours and 14 minutes.

Both players had a string of match points, but Mauresmo finally triumphed on her fifth attempt.

Also on Wednesday, Sara Errani beat Tsvetana Pironkova 6-7 (3/7) 7-5 6-3 in another marathon match that lasted a tick over three and a half hours, and Olga Govortsova overcame qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva 6-0 5-7 7-5.
