Isner defeats Querrey in battle of big-serving Americans at French Open

John Isner is through to the second round of the French Open after defeating compatriot Sam Querrey with relative ease.

John Isner beat out fellow American Sam Querrey 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4 in just one hour and 45 minutes.

Both men won over 80% of points behind their first serves, but Isner had the edge on second serves, winning 63% to Querrey’s 50%.

While Isner was not offered many break point chances by his fellow countryman, he did take them when needed, coverting 2 of 3 break chances while Querrey missed both of his.

Isner had a disappointing 2020 French Open, losing to up-and-coming American youngster Sebastian Korda in the second round, and will be hoping to improve on such a result at this year’s tournament.

Isner has historically never gone further than the fourth round at the French Open, doing so three times in 2014, 2016, and 2018.

John Isner will face Filip Krajinovic in the second round of the French Open.
