Iga Swiatek reveals ‘mistakes’ that lead to Wimbledon exit

Iga Swiatek has reflected on her Wimbledon quarter-final defeat to Elina Svitolina, with the No.1 revealing that she is ‘rooting’ for the Ukrainian wildcard to win her first Grand Slam title.

Swiatek was beaten by former No.3 Svitolina, 5-7 7-6(5) 2-6, after achieving her best ever result at SW19 by reaching the last eight.

The four-time Grand Slam champion has spoken about where she thought she went wrong, “I felt like I’m pretty much making the same mistakes. Even though I tried to do better on some shots. I wanted some tips, what they think I should actually focus on.

“Sometimes when something is not working, it’s hard to find a reason because there are maybe a few reasons. When somebody is looking from the outside, it may be a bit easier to analyse.”

Swiatek had saved two match points in her previous match against Belinda Bencic, where she hit 24 unforced errors and nearly doubled that figure in her defeat to Svitolina.

The 22-year-old was critical of her forehand in that regard, “My forehand wasn’t the best. I’m still working on it…It’s hard for me to point one thing what failed exactly.”

She added, “I think (Svitolina) was just overall playing aggressively and giving it all in every shot. So for sure I made some mistakes that I shouldn’t do. That’s why I lost. But she also put pressure on me, I think.”

Despite her obvious disappointment, Swiatek revealed that she was hoping for Svitolina to be lifting the Venus Rosewater dish on Saturday, “I think overall, looking at her career, having a Grand Slam title would be pretty amazing for her.

“I’ll root for her, especially because we like each other as people. I told her on the net that I hope she wins this tournament…It’s tough to win a Grand Slam. I know that for sure she wants it really bad.”

Swiatek will also be hoping that Aryna Sabalenka is not in the final on Saturday, as the Belarusian will dethrone the Pole’s 66-week stay at the top of the WTA rankings with a win over Ons Jabeur later today.
