‘I was very happy with how I played,’ says Novak Djokovic after Diego Schwartzman win


Novak Djokovic declared himself ‘very happy’ with his opening ATP Finals win over Diego Schwartzman.

The world number one was rarely troubled by the Argentinian, who was making his debut in the competition at the age of 28.

Djokovic dropped just five games in the whole match to extend his winning record over Schwartzman to 8-0.

“At the beginning of the match it wasn’t that great from me,” Djokovic said after the match.

“It was a close encounter until I broke him for 4-3 [in the first set].

“In the second set I started swinging for the ball a little bit more with a bit less hesitation. I was very pleased with the way I played.”

“It was a good opening match and I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Djokovic will face Daniil Medvedev next on Wednesday, with the Russian beating Alexander Zverev in his opening match.

Despite the win, though, he admitted the atmosphere was odd without the usual 15,000+ fans inside the O2.

“I’ve been playing the finals here for many years, some incredible matches and atmospheres, and I must say it feels very strange to play in front of empty stands,” he said.
