“He’s earned the right” British legend backs Andy Murray as ‘wildcard-gate’ rolls on


Tim Henman says fellow Brit tennis star Andy Murray had every right to accept a wildcard into the men’s singles at Roland Garros this year, in contrast to fellow commentator Mats Wilander

 

Andy Murray had previously come in for some strong criticism from 4 time Slam winner Mats Wilander after his below par showing in the first round at the 2020 French Open, but now Tim Henman has backed Murray’s decision saying the Scot has “very much earned the right for wildcards”.

Henman, who is working for Eurosport throughout the tournament, was asked how he reacted to Wilander’s comment that Murray was being selfish in accepting the wildcard. Henman said, “I very much think he has earned the right for wildcards. We all know the credentials for his career. Coming back to play professional tennis with a metal hip, he is an inspiration to a whole new group of people. I totally support that. I also think that Andy has been incredibly honest with himself and is probably his own harshest critic, so he’ll know when the time is right and he wouldn’t want to be there making up the numbers. He wants to be there competing, and winning more big matches.”
