‘He should be suspended and fined’ – Former world number four slams Alexander Zverev tantrum
Greg Rusedski thinks that the ATP should dole out more punishment for Alexander Zverev after he verbally abused and physically threatened a chair umpire in Acapulco.
The world number three swore at the umpire and broke his racket against the umpire’s chair in a doubles match and was withdrawn from the singles event soon after.
Zverev has apologised for his actions in a social media statement, but former world number four Rusedski believes that is not enough.
“With regards to Zverev breaking his racket on the chair umpire’s chair and [his] behaviour, the only response has to be a suspension and fine,” the 1997 US Open finalist tweeted on the matter.
While Zverev’s behaviour has been roundly condemned by almost all who have spoken on the matter, he has received a measure of empathy from fellow pros.
Andy Murray admitted that he himself has not always acted how he would like on a tennis court.
“I’m certainly not claiming to be an angel, I’m not perfect myself,” Murray said after emphasising that Zverev’s actions were still “dangerous and reckless.”

In addition, world number one Novak Djokovic also understood the frustration players can feel.
He added: “I’ve made mistakes in the past where I’ve had tantrums on the court.
“So I understand what the player is going through, but of course I do not justify [Zverev’s] actions.”
Djokovic went on to say that Zverev did the right thing with his statement of apology, and that the disqualification was correct.
