Hernandez claimed his place in round two with a 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 victory over the home favourite in the Romanian capital.

It turned out to be a good day for Spain all in all, with unseeded pair Santiago Ventura and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo also knocking out more fancied opponents.

Ventura was a 6-4 6-1 winner against fourth-seeded Russian Igor Andreev while Ramirez Hidalgo saw off seventh-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi 6-4 6-4.

The two seeded Spaniards in action, second seed Nicolas Almagro and number five Albert Montanes, enjoyed straight-sets victories over Italian duo Simone Bolelli and Potito Starace respectively.

Their unseeded compatriots Alberto Martin and Pere Riba required three sets apiece to advance against Frenchman Florent Serra and Portugal’s Frederico Gil.

Third seed Juan Monaco of Argentina progressed with little difficulty, overcoming Brazilian Julio Silva 6-2 6-4, while sixth-seeded Austrian Daniel Koellerer had to come from a set down to get past Italian Filippo Volandri 2-6 7-5 6-3.

Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina also required three sets to oust Belgium’s Olivier Rochus 6-7 (4/7) 6-1 6-4, while Marius Copil dominated the all-Romanian encounter with Victor Crivoi 6-3 6-2.
