Djokovic, the two-time defending champion in Miami, was beaten 6-2 6-4 by Haas, 34, who claimed his first win against a top-ranked player since he beat Andre Agassi in 1999.

"This is crazy," Haas said. "Playing against someone like Novak and coming out on top at this time of my career, it's unbelievable."

"All the credit to Tommy," Djokovic said. "He played a great match and he was the better player, no question about it."

Haas’ win result opens up the draw for world No.3 Andy Murray, who had no such problems as he cruised into the quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Andreas Seppi.

As the highest-ranked player left in the draw, Murray is yet to drop a set in Miami as he set up a last-eight clash with Marin Cilic, who defeated sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5 7-6(4). Murray will climb above Roger Federer to world No.2 if he wins at Crandon Park this week.

Haas, meanwhile, will face Gilles Simon in the quarter-finals after the Frenchman came from a set down to beat Janko Tipsarevic 5-7 6-2 6-2.

Tomas Berdych looked impressive as he sailed into the last eight with a 6-1 6-1 win over home favourite Sam Querrey, while David Ferrer, Jurgen Melzer and Richard Gasquet complete the quarter-final line-up.
