With the country’s second highest-ranked player, Alex Bogdanovic, discarded because of his poor David Cup record, captain John Lloyd set up the play-offs to decide who would join Andy Murray and doubles specialist Ross Hutchins in the side to face Ukraine next month.

Goodall, the highest-ranked player participating, beat Fleming 6-4 6-4 6-4.

The match between James Ward and 18-year-old Dan Evans also went with rankings, Ward running out a 7-6 (7/4) 6-1 4-6 2-6 6-3 winner.

In the day’s other match, Chris Eaton upset Alex Slabinsky 6-4 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7/5).

The play-offs will continue on Wednesday with Ward facing Eaton, Goodall meeting Slabinsky and Evans taking on Fleming before a final set of games takes place on Friday.

Only a player winning all three of his matches will be certain of securing a place in the team for the Glasgow tie on March 6-8.
