Fernando Gonzalez has finally been given clearance to return to the tennis court after spending six months on the sidelines following hip surgery last September.

The Chilean revealed on twitter: “Today I finish my 6 months post-op rehab. I was discharged and ready to go back to the game.”

The 11-time ATP tour titlist, who rose to a career-high world No.5 in January 2007 after reaching the final of the Australian Open, has plummeted to 395th in the ladder after he was forced to undergo surgery shortly after retiring in the first round of last September’s US Open.

Gonzalez’s retirement against Ivan Dodig at Flushing Meadows was just his second tour appearance since losing to Alexandr Dolgopolov in round two at Roland Garros last year, but the 30-year-old is set to make a return to the tour as a wild card at the Serbia Open later this month.

In recent weeks, Gonzalez has been training alongside the Chilean Davis Cup team in Santiago before heading out to the United States, where he has been hitting with Andy Murray and World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki.
