Gasquet crashes out early in Holland


Richard Gasquet was the biggest casualty on Tuesday as the three grass events currently taking place moved towards the quarter-final stages.

Richard Gasquet, who has had a miserable run of form this year, went down 7-5, 7-6 to fellow Frenchman Marc Giquel in the second round of the Ordina Open in the Netherlands.

Richard Gasquet has now won just seven singles matches on the ATP tour since Januarys Australian Open.

Sixth seed Mario Ancic had things considerably easier as he moved into the last eight with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Belgian Steve Darcis.

The Croat takes on top seed David Ferrer of Spain in the last eight after the world No.5 beat Italian qualifier Massimo Dellacqua 6-2, 7-6.

In the womens event at the same venue, second seed Anna Chakvetadze was close to packing her bags early, but just scraped through against German Angelique Kerber 7-6 in the third set.

The world No.8 will take on Alona Bondarenko in the quarters after she saw off Kiwi qualifier Marina Erakovic in three sets.

Third seed and recent French Open runner-up Dinara Safina also booked her place in the last eight with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory over Frenchwoman Camille Pin.

In Eastbourne, the International Womens Open lost its seventh seed, Nicole Vaidisova, as she went down 6-2, 6-4 to Olga Govortsova.

There were also wins for young Dane Caroline Wozniacki who will take on top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round and Russian qualifier Alisa Kleybanova, who put out British wild card Mel South 6-4, 6-4.

The event also lost one of its former world No.1s when Lindsay Davenport was forced to withdraw before her first round match.

The 31-year-olds knee injury stopped her from making it onto court but she hopes to be ready in time for Wimbledon.

In Nottingham, No.1 seed Radek Stepanek booked his place in the second round when he beat big American John Isner 6-3, 6-2.

His reward is a second round meeting with another American, Vince Spadea, who beat young Briton Alex Slabinsky 6-1, 7-5.

French Open semi-finalist Gael Monfils had to work hard for his second round berth, but eventually came through 7-6, 6-4 against big-serving Aussie Chris Guccione.

There were also wins for fifth seed Gilles Simon, Thomas Johansson, Aussie Samuel Groth and Eduardo Schwank.

There is one Briton still alive at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre after Alex Bogdanovic beat countryman James Ward 6-3, 6-4 in round one. The victory earns Boggo a second round clash with Croat Marin Cilic.
