Barrois had just taken the first set 6-4 when Spaniard Garrigues, the two-time defending champion, decided she could no longer continue.

Second seed Shuai Peng made it through with a 6-3 7-6 (8/6) defeat of Pauline Parmentier, but fourth seed Stephanie Cohen-Aloro lost 4-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 to Argentinian Gisela Dulko.

Monica Niculescu came back from a set down to see off Yuliya Beygelzimer 5-7 6-0 6-4, and Lucie Hradecka downed Alla Kudryavtseva 7-5 6-0.

In Wednesday’s other games, Ayumi Morita beat Julie Coin 4-6 6-0 6-0, Viktoriya Kutuzova saw off Stephanie Foretz and Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai claimed a 6-4 6-1 win over Anastasiya Yakimova.
