Garrigues fights back to win

An upset looked on the cards when her Czech opponent Klara Zakopalova took the first set 6-1, but the Spaniard bounced back to win 1-6 7-6 (7/1) 6-3.

Second-seeded Russian Alisa Kleybanova enjoyed a rather smoother path through as she beat Jarmila Groth 6-4 6-1, but third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Roberta Vinci, seeded seven, were both knocked out.

Hungary’s Melinda Czink saw off Pavlyuchenkova 7-6 (7/1) 3-6 6-3 and Slovenian qualifier Polona Hercog overcame Vinci 6-2 6-4.

Sixth seed Ekaterina Makarova of Russia defeated Japan’s Akiko Morigami 6-0 6-1.

Briton Anne Keothavong took the opening set in her second-round match against Lourdes Dominguez Lino, but went out in three. The Spaniard progressed 4-6 7-5 6-3.

Other second-round winners were Marta Domachowska and Lucie Hradecka.
