The former world number one claimed a 6-3 6-2 win over Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq in one hour 31 minutes at the clay court tournament in Costa do Sauipe.

Mello, meanwhile, beat two seeds in one day, defeating Romania’s Victor Hanescu 7-5 6-3 before ousting third seed and fellow Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-3 7-6 (7/3).

It was also Bellucci’s second contest of the day after the previous day’s washout forced him to play his second-round clash with Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who was beaten 6-4 6-2.

Russia’s Igor Andreev will meet Poland’s Lukasz Kubot in the second semi-final.

Kubot was also forced to play twice in one day, eliminating second seed Alberto Montanes in the second round 6-2 6-2 before winning his last-eight clash with Fabio Fognini – a 0-6 6-1 7-6 (7/1) second round winner over Spain’s Marcel Granollers.

Andreev, the fourth seed, defeated sixth seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-1 6-1 in his quarter-final clash.
