For the past four years, Federer has opened his season at the Qatar Open in Doha, where he is a three-time champion, but in a break with tradition the Swiss announced this week that next season he will make his debut at the Brisbane International.

Federer, who added two clay-court tournaments to his schedule following his second-round exit at Wimbledon, has been experimenting with a new racket after dropping to No.5 in the rankings for the first time since 2003.

And now the 17-time Grand Slam champion, who has four Australian Open titles to his name, has decided to put the finishing touches to his preparations for the first major of the year in Queensland rather than the Middle East.

“I’ve heard many great things from the other players, they say it’s a very friendly tournament, fan friendly, player friendly. What else do you expect to be quite honest, in Australia you guys do great work,” Federer said.

“I’ve always hoped that I could come there, so I am happy we are all able to make it work … I’m not just coming there [to Australia] for the Australian Open, especially when I commit so early in advance, it’s also to win in Brisbane."

“Roger Federer is a global superstar and arguably the most accomplished tennis player in history,” said tournament director Cameron Pearson. “His attendance at this event will be a legacy for future generations.”
