It wasnt an easy ride for the Swiss, although he was very happy with his performance after the match.

When I get through those kind of tough matches, sometimes I go on to win the tournament and I don’t ever look back. I hope that’s what’s going to happen right now, Federer told the press.

The Wednesday night crowd reached a peak audience of 12,606 fans and Federer will now play Novak Djokovic in the final four.

World No.3 Djokovic needed less time to take out Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4. The Serb has lost to Tsonga four times in a row since he beat him in the 2008 Aussie Open final so was keen to express his satisfaction after the match.

I have to be very happy with today’s performance, because I have been struggling to find a way to win against him in the last four encounters.

The remaining quarter-finals take place on Thursday with Andy Murray taking on his Aussie Open nemesis Fernando Verdasco and world No.1 Rafael Nadal up against Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.

The big guns were equally successful in the womens draw with the first quarter-final seeing world No.1 Serena Williams edge past Chinas Li Na 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Serena has beaten three Chinese women along the way and will now play sister Venus in the semi-finals who dispatched 26th seed Czech Iveta Benesova 6-1, 6-4.

The Williams sisters have played each other 19 times with Venus leading the series 10-9. Serena needs to win the match if she is to retain her No.1 status if she loses Dinara Safina will take charge.
