The Swiss ace, who had the top ranking taken from him by Spaniard Rafael Nadal in August, had glandular fever at the start of the year and begins the 2009 season on New Year’s day in Abu Dhabi.

Federer wrote on his website: “There is such a large number of challenges ahead and I look forward to facing them.”
