Federer powers past Haase

The Swiss has now won his last 11 semi-finals as Masters level and he will chase a 94th career title on Sunday against either Alexander Zverev or Denis Shapovalov.

It was the biggest match of Haase’s 12-year career but he never appeared fazed by the occasion. The world No.51 was a massive underdog but he competed well and was unfortunate not to force a deciding set against his friend and rival.

Federer has not yet produced his fearsome best in the tournament and he was in cruise-control this afternoon. At no point was the 36-year-old ever in danger of losing the match and he upped his level in the second set tiebreak to complete the job and secure a 16th consecutive victory.

The contest began with both players enjoying success on their opponent’s delivery. Early breaks were traded however Federer breached the Haase serve for a second time to move 3-1 ahead – and that was all he required to take the opening set by six games to three.

The Dutchman was more competitive in the second set and he was resolute behind his delivery. He failed to make an impression in Federer’s service games, though, and a tiebreak was called into action.

The Wimbledon champion had won his last seven tiebreaks and he was victorious once again. A shanked forehand from the Dutchman was his final act, be he departed Court Central with his pride in tact after a hugely productive week.
