Pete Sampras’ former coach helped the Swiss return to world No.1 and win a 17th Grand Slam title after joining forces with Federer in 2010.

However, following his early exit last week in Shanghai, where he was stunned by a resurgent Gael Monfils, Federer has decided to part ways with the American.

“After a terrific 3 ½ years working together, Paul and I have decided to move on to the next chapter in our professional lives,” Federer said in a statement on his website. “When we started together we had a vision of a three-year plan to win another Grand Slam title and get back to the No.1 ranking. Along with many other goals and great memories, these two main goals were achieved.

“After numerous conversations culminating at the end of our most recent training block, we felt like this was the best time and path for both of us. Paul remains a dear friend, and we both look forward to continuing our friendship. I want to thank Paul for his help and the value he has added to me and my team.”

Federer, who has failed to reach a Grand Slam final this year for the first time since 2002, is in danger of missing out on the eight-man season finale at The O2, where he is a six-time champion.

The 32-year-old, who has one a single major title (2012 Wimbledon) since joining forces with Annacone in the summer of 2010, will continue working with Swiss Davis Cup captain Severin Luthi.
