Nadal played his first tournament in over seven months last week in Chile, where he reached the final of the VTR Open, losing to world No.73 Horacio Zeballos in the final.

While the world No. 5 continues his comeback at the Brasil Open in Sao Paolo this week, Federer, who returns to action at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, observed that the 11-time grand slam champion looked in good shape.

"I saw a few pictures of Rafa, last week. I see he's still a left-hander – and his shirts looked good,” Federer joked.

"I'm happy to see him back and playing on the tour. He seems to have good energy. I was surprised he lost a final against a player ranked outside the top 50.

"I'm sure he got a lot of information about his game last week. He knows now how much strain he is putting on his body and how he is dealing with it."
