The world No.5 suffered a humiliating defeat in front of his home fans to Daniel Brands in his opening match at the Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad last week.
Federer, who turns 32 next week, has also been experimenting with a 98-inch Wilson prototype racket in Gstaad and in Hamburg, where he lost in the semi-finals to Federico Delbonis.
He is scheduled to begin his preparations for the US Open in Canada next week, but he is yet to decide whether he will be playing at the Uniprix Stadium.
"I've had serious problems with the back; I had to get some anti-inflammatories in Hamburg due to the pain," Federer revealed.
"I will have to do a lot of exercises and see how it all feels. My main priority now is to fix my back. I would love to be able to train at 100 per cent.
“I'll have to see if the rehab is enough to let me play in Montreal. If it is, I'll go; if not, then it gives me another week."
