Fans go into meltdown as Del Potro loses incredible rally at 2019 French Open but wins match

Argentine World no. 9 Juan Martin del Potro was involved in one of the most incredible points you’ll ever see and even though he lost the point he still managed to win the match much to the delight of the French fans

8th seeded Del Potro was playing Nicolas Jarry from Chile when the point took place in the 7th game of the 4th set. The point included at least three shots that most fans would be happy to see just once in a rally but to have all three in the same rally sent the fans into meltdown

Jarry started the action with an audacious sliced drop volley which Del Potro managed to reach but then found himself scampering back to the baseline to retrieve a lob. He decided to play a ‘hotdog’ to return the lob which Jarry could only defend, this brought del Potro to the net again at which point he thought he’d passed the Chilean opponent only for Jarry to dive full length and play an incredible winning forehand volley.

Del Potro went on to win the first round match and no faces Japanese player Nishioka in the second round.

Del Potro has been trying to revive his career after another long injury break thanks to a broken leg he sustained in a match at the end of 2018. The former US Open Champion has only played 3 tournaments in 2019 but is back to full fitness and will be hoping his hammer of a forehand, huge serve and mental resilience will see him return to the Top 5 in the singles rankings.
