The Italian prevailed 6-0 6-4 to advance at the expense of her Belarusian opponent.

Sixth-seeded Sandra Zahlavova of Czech Republic enjoyed a similarly trouble-free passage with a 6-3 6-2 triumph over Russia’s Alexandra Panova in round one.

Angelique Kerber, the fifth seed from Germany, and eighth-seeded Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja were made to work hard by unseeded players, however.

Kerber overcame Canada’s Sharon Fichman 6-3 3-6 6-4 while Parra Santonja saw off Ukraine’s Olga Savchuk 6-7 (6/8) 6-4 6-2.

Czech Republic’s Petra Cetkovska and Romania’s Edina Gallovits also progressed with straight-sets wins against Peruvian wild card Bianca Botto and Spain’s Lourdes Dominguez Lino respectively.
