Eaton, who rose to prominence at Wimbledon last year when he came through qualifying to reach the second round, beat Ward 6-3 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 2-6 21-19 in a match lasting nearly seven hours.

The pair are among six players taking part in three days of play-offs at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, with captain John Lloyd then deciding the two players who will join Andy Murray and Ross Hutchins in the team.

Eaton preserved his 100% record following Monday’s win over Alex Slabinsky and will bid for a third victory on Friday.

British number three Josh Goodall is the only other man with two wins after he beat Slabinsky 6-3 3-6 7-5 4-6 6-2.

In the day’s other match, Colin Fleming beat youngster Dan Evans 7-5 6-2 0-6 6-0.
