Davydenko, the second seed behind Britain’s Andy Murray, defeated qualifier Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-2 6-1 in his first-round clash.

Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych was a 6-3 6-4 victor over Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, while Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez also won in straight sets, defeating Germany’s Simon Greul 7-5 6-2. Albert Montanes beat qualifier Roberto Bautista-Agut in an all-Spanish clash 6-1 3-6 6-4.
