Dominic Thiem breaks new ground in another leap up ATP rankings

Dominic Thiem will be ranked back inside the APT top 200 on Monday with his run to the semi-finals of the Swiss Open in Gstaad. 

The former world number three suffered a 6-1, 6-4 defeat to 2018 champion and second seed Matteo Berrettini, though there was no shame in that loss to the in-form Italian.

Despite that loss, Thiem still managed to secure 90 ATP ranking points, enough to see him up 75 spots to 199th in the world.

Still ranked 15th at the start of the season, Thiem gradually tumbled as low as 352nd in June as his ranking points dropped while he failed to register wins.

But after back-to-back wins over top 50 opponents in Bastad and a further three victories in Switzerland, the Austrian is building momentum and confidence to move back towards his best.

Next up, Thiem will head back to his home country as he makes a first appearance at the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel since winning the title there in 2019.

With Kitzbuhel an ATP 250 event, should Thiem manage to capture the title there he could be ranked back inside the top 120 or so come 1st August.

 

 

During his run in Gstaad, Thiem described his new outlook on tour after so many injury struggles and an entire year without a tour level win.

“I feel now a bit like I did at the beginning of my career, where every win was something very special,” Thiem told the ATPTour.com. “I reached the quarter-finals in Bastad at an ATP 250 and it feels huge to me.”

A semi-final in Gstaad must have felt even bigger for the 28-year-old as he looks to continue his rise up the rankings.
