Dominic Thiem admits fatigue was a factor in French Open exit – ‘He was fresher than me’

Dominic Thiem says fatigue from his US Open triumph was the key reason behind his Roland Garros exit, but that’s fine with him.

Thiem won his maiden Grand Slam title in New York last month, although the quick turnaround from hardcourts in America to clay in Europe was always going to be a physical challenge.

He still gave a fine account of himself in Paris, though, even if he felt he could have done more with a little extra left in his legs.

“I think if I wanted to win the match, I should have done it in four,” Dominic Thiem said after his five-hour marathon against Diego Schwartzman in the quarter-finals. “He was just a little fresher than me.

“I’m not sad with my performance here in Roland Garros. I mean, it was pretty short time with the long trip home, jet lag, and everything.

“Then, of course, the first slam, which is a special thing. Come here, play in pretty brutal conditions, I would say. I’m pretty happy.”
