Djokovic struggles but secures third-round spot

Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the Australian Open despite an error-strewn performance against Marco Chiudinelli.

The former champ registered nine double-faults and 52 unforced errors in his 3-6 6-1 6-1 6-3 win over the Swiss, making his Australian Open debut.

“I was well aware of his quality, and he played extremely well, especially in the first set and the start of the second,” Djokovic said. “I was very lucky to get two sets to one up.

Djokovic faces Denis Istomin in the third round, a 7-5 6-3 6-4 winner over Michael Berrer.

Roger Federer had no such problems as he swept into the third round with a 6-2 6-3 6-2 demolition of Victor Hanescu.

Demonstrating some great touch as he played in front of the visiting Prince William, the top seed produced 52 winners and landing 67% of his first serves in a gilt-edged performance. He faces Albert Monta
