The Serb is only the ninth player in the history of the ATP rankings to reach the milestone, but faces a battle to stay on top spot, with Rafael Nadal hot on his heels.

Djokovic, who is bidding to finish the season at No.1 for a third straight year, tops the rankings on 11,120 points, while US Open champion Nadal has 10,860.

Both players are scheduled to play at the China Open next week, when Djokovic will be defending his title (and 500 ranking points), while Nadal has no points to defend.

The Spaniard, who has won 10 titles since making his comeback from a knee injury in February, will return to No.1 for the first time since July 2011 if he reaches the final in Beijing.
