The Serbian, in conjunction with his management group, are hoping to switch the event which has fallen on hard times due to its regular sponsor Krijco, a casino chain, ending its involvement.

“It is something that we have not been speaking about publicly but we closed out the deal with Amersfoort, the Dutch Open and we bought the licence from them to have a tournament in Serbia next year so this is our big goal,” said Djokovic speaking at the Madrid Masters.

“It is still not 100%. We still need to do some administrative work in the next couple of weeks, next couple of months.”

The switch still requires the green light from the ATP, although that is unlikely to pose a problem.

He added: “I have spoken to the ATP board of directors and the official people from the ATP and they have said that if we have good enough conditions and if we bought the licence then it is more or less a formality but it’s still not 100% for sure.”

World number three Djokovic claimed his first ATP title in Amersfoort two years ago.
