Djokovic feared he may be forced to miss the opening Masters 1000 event on clay after rolling his ankle in Davis Cup action for Serbia.

However, although the world No.1 admits he is still taking things “day by day”, he has taken the decision to play in the principality and will face Mikhail Youzhny.

"I have good news," Djokovic said in a video he posted on Twitter. "I will be playing tomorrow in Monte Carlo, my first match.

“I'm very excited about it, to be honest, because in the last six, seven days I've been doing everything in my power, after the incident in the Davis Cup, in order to recover.

“My ankle is in a state that is good enough for me to perform. Hopefully I can perform my best and win, and I can see how it goes day by day."

Eight-time defending champion Rafael Nadal and Britain’s Andy Murray are also in action at the Monte Carlo Country Club on Wednesday.
