The former US Open champion missed the Portugal Open and Mutua Madrid Open due to a respiratory illness and returned to Argentina after his third round defeat to Benoit Paire at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

It was reported that Del Potro, who reached the French Open semi-finals in 2009, suffered a decline in ‘physical and respiratory capacity’ as a result of the illness.

"This is a tough blow, because these are the events you dream of winning," said Del Potro. "Now I must get over this disappointment and recover completely in order to prepare at 100 per cent for the tests to come."

Del Potro joins Andy Murray on the sidelines after the Brit confirmed he would miss the clay-court Grand Slam with a back injury.
