Del Potro: Knee really bothers me

Juan Martin del Potro must have hoped he had seen the end of his physical problems after spending the best part of a year out of the game with a wrist problem. However, an injury to his left knee is now threatening his progress at the French Open.

“This is something that bothers me,” Del Potro admitted after his victory over France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin. “It’s a constant bother, so what I try and do is not to think about it. I try and do my best with my tennis. And when I'm out there on the court I try not to think too much about the fact that it really bothers me. So I'll continue with my treatment and the necessary practice, what I usually do. I want to be ready when I'm on the courts.”

He added: “The injury really troubles me when I'm trying to find the right stance when I'm serving. If you're not strong enough on your legs, it's difficult for you to play some shots more than others. This is something difficult to manage. But I try not to think about it at all. What's important for me is to be right there on the courts, to be aggressive, offensive all the time.”

Although Del Potro won his only Grand Slam title at the US Open, the world No.9 has proved that he can perform on clay as well as on hard courts. Three years ago he reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros and looked on course to win a place in the final when he led Roger Federer by two sets to one, only for the Swiss to come back and win after three and a half hours.
