Del Potro fans respond to heartfelt message as he prepares for return at Indian Wells

Juan Martin Del Potro lost in the quarter finals of the Delray Beach ATP 250 tournament but his positive and honest message on Twitter brought some emotional responses from his loyal fans

The Argentinian legend and Grand Slam champion has suffered with injury probably more than any other player on tour over the past years, so to see him pulling out of tournaments is always a worry but this time it seems to be for the right reasons.

Del Potro lost to 84th ranked Amercian MacKenzie McDonalod in a thrilling 3rd set tie break at the Florida tournament and then sent this message to his fans on Twitter:

It seems that Del Potro is going to take his time over this recovery. Delray Beach was his first tournament since Shanghai in October 2018. During that tournament he fractured his kneecap in his match against Borna Coric when he fell heavily. Subsequently he discovered the fracture and was forced to pull out of all tournaments for the rest of 2018 and the start of 2019. With such a history of injury its no surprise that he wants to take things slowly now.

Del Potro will be desperate for a strong showing at Insian Wells and then Miami this year as they are tournaments he has traditionally performed well at and enjoyed great support from the crowds. Miami has a large South American population so his support there is always patriotic and vocal which Del Potro loves. He reached the final of Indian Wells in 2013 and enjoys the fast pace and high bounce of the conditions which really suit his game and size.

Del Potro will have aspirations to rise further up the rankings from his current position at No.4 having reached No.3 in the past. To achieve this he will need to play a full schedule of the Masters 1000 events and Grand Slams in 2019 which may go some way to explaining why he’s decided not to play the Acapulco tournament this week.
