The Russian, the winner in Hamburg last week, defeated Spanish veteran Alberto Martin 6-2 6-3. In the last eight he will play Simone Bolelli, who won his all-Italian clash with Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-4.

Sixth seed Nicolas Almagro was another to fall, much to the delight of the home fans who saw him beaten 7-5 7-6 (7/2) by Croatian Ivan Ljubicic.

He next plays fourth seed Jurgen Melzer, who beat Pablo Cuevas 6-4 6-3.

Fifth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero clawed back from a nightmare start against another Italian, Potito Starace, to reach the last eight 1-6 6-3 6-2. He next plays Maximo Gonzalez, a 6-4 6-4 winner over Spain’s Oscar Hernandez.
