The top seed never gave his Austrian opponent a sniff, overpowering him with the help of five breaks of serve.

In Sunday’s final, he will play Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero, who faced a stiffer test as he beat Andreas Seppi in the other semi.

The fifth seed looked set for a similarly easy day when he claimed the first set 6-1.

However, the second set went into a tie-breaker, which the Italian won 7-1, and the third looked to be heading the same way before Ferrero finally prevailed 6-1 6-7 (1/7) 7-5.

Davydenko, who recently returned to the world’s top 10, has won two of four previous meetings against Ferrero, including their most recent encounter in Estoril this year.
