Davydenko, troubled by a heel injury all year, was playing in his first match since he was dumped out in straight sets in the third round of Wimbledon by Czech Tomas Berdych.

Romanian fourth seed Victor Hanescu beat German qualifier Dominik Meffert 6-4 7-6 (8/6), while Poland’s Lukasz Kubot, a finalist two months ago in Belgrade, beat fellow qualifier Pablo Andujar of Spain 6-2 6-4.
