Daniil Medvedev wins titanic Turin tussle to cement dominance over Alexander Zverev

Daniil Medvedev has now beaten Alexander Zverev in their five previous meetings, the German last winning a tie between them two years ago.

Heading into their third consecutive year meeting at the ATP Finals, the two shared a 5-5 head-to-head.

An early break to open the match saw Medvedev claim the set 6-3 to surge in front.

Neither man surrendered a break in the second to set up a tiebreak. While Medvedev immediately gained the mini-break, Zverev eventually tied the match by winning the breaker 7-3.

A deciding set that once again went without any service breaks was this time won by Medvedev, clinching victory 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (8-6).

Since the last time Zverev defeated Medvedev, the Russian has turned their rivalry from down 1-5 to 6-5 in his favour.

In fact, the last time Zverev defeated Medvedev was in the group stage of the 2019 ATP Finals, when the Russian made his debut.

The Russian has now won seven successive matches at ATP Finals having won the 2020 event without losing a match and winning his first two round robin encounters in Turin this year.

Moreover, despite both his matches going to a deciding set, Medvedev has not actually been broken yet at the tournament.

To round off his group stage campaign, Medvedev will take on Matteo Berrettini, at least as long as the Italian does not withdraw before then.

The world number seven suffered a match-ending injury against Zverev in his first round robin, and is set to face Hubert Hurkacz next.

If he does withdraw from the event, Medvedev would take on another Italian in first alternate Jannik Sinner.
