Robson is set to make her debut on the WTA tour this week when she will play alongside the likes of former world number one Amelie Mauresmo at the Fortis Championships in Luxembourg.

“I’m sure Laura will be feeling like I was, just so excited to be given this opportunity,” Croft told the Mail on Sunday. “You can’t wait to put yourself on the court against the best players in the world.”

She added: “It will seem like a dream come true. But it’s also completely friendless and a really hard world.”

Croft reached a career-high of 21 in the world rankings before retiring in 1988 and continued: “The women take about a month to work out your weaknesses – then hammer them…

“It’s weird, very insular.

“It occurred to me that I might end up 35 years old, unmarried with no children or friends.”

However, Croft is optimistic about Robson’s chances.

“She appears to have the game and the grit that you need,” she added.
