Costa took over the post last month as the replacement for Emilio Sanchez Vicario, who stepped down after leading Spain to their third Davis Cup title with a 3-1 victory over Argentina in November.

He said: “Even though they are not a renowned team like France, United States or Russia, the Serbians now are very good and I’m sure that they are going to make things very difficult for us and it will be challenging.”

Costa, who helped Spain to Davis Cup success as a player in 2000, faces a tricky-looking encounter for his first tie in charge as the champions host a Serbia side likely to include world number three Novak Djokovic and doubles ace Nenad Zimonjic.

The 33-year-old Costa admits the Serbians pose a real threat to his side, but nevertheless is confident they can overcome their fellow Europeans.

“They are very powerful and have a lot of quality,” Costa added.

“(However) I’m not afraid, with the players that we have we can only think about winning every year.”

Spain face Serbia in Benidorm from March 6-8.
