Cohen-Aloro won 6-0 6-3 as Cornet, the world’s number 15, failed to find her form.

Second seed Flavia Pennetta is now the top-ranked player in the tournament after she saw off first round opponent Petra Kvitova 6-3 6-3, while seventh seed Sara Errani edged Mathilde Johansson 2-6 7-5 6-3.

Elsewhere Lucie Safarova beat Tsvetana Pironkova, Magdalena Rybarikova got past Klara Zakopalova and Roberta Vinci beat Pauline Parmentier

Anabel Medina Garrigues – Spain’s highest-ranked player – was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an abdominal strain.
